Selena Gomez is now a godmother after visiting with relatives and celebrating the arrival of a new baby in her family this week.

The 22-year-old native Texan recently shared a photo on Instagram taken with cousins and aunts when she announced news of the baby as well as her role as a godmother.

"I mean, candids are always the best," Gomez wrote in the caption of the group photo. "My cousin is having her first. We always dreamed of having one together. UM, not today BUT beyond happy I'm a godmother now."

According to the tradition in many denominations of Christianity, Gomez's responsibility as a godparent will be to sponsor the child's baptism. In more secular views, a godparent is someone selected by parents to take interest in a child's upbringing and personal development, while also stepping in should anything ever happen to the parents.

It comes as no surprise that Gomez was selected as a Godmother; the actress is an outspoken Christian who often encourages others to pursue a relationship with God. In a powerful message posted to fans, the actress took a stance against teen suicide while offering hope to those suffering from depression with the explanation, "God puts us in situations that are so unexplainably difficult for a reason."

"There is someone in the world feeling so much, just like you," the singer penned in the message. "There is someone who will always have it better or have it way worse than you. The point of all of that is to feel not alone. My point is, you are not alone in this world."

Furthermore, Gomez cited faith as being a source of strength against sadness.

"Your purpose is to share, help, encourage," Gomez added. "Remember that. Please. Before you think of taking your life, think of all the [lives] you could save. More importantly, there is a God that will love you more than I ever could."

More recently, the former Disney star took time out of her busy acting and recording schedule to go outside and thank God in a cheerful photo.

"Took a break from the studio to run and jump in the grass," Gomez wrote in the caption of the snapshot. "Our God is so good!"

Meanwhile, Gomez is expected to both release new music and appear in the film "In Dubious Battle" sometime later this year.
