The tragic ending of their relationship even had Mickey professing his love for Ian. However, Ian refused the gesture and said, "Too much is wrong with me. You can't fix me because I'm not broken. I don't need to be fixed. I'm me."

It is evident that the current diagnosis has left Ian in an unstable state of mind. With that, he will need to find clarity in his life. This will include trying to figure out just how Mickey fits into his life.

Fans were heartbroken with the outcome of their relationship. However, John Wells, the creator of the series, recently spoke about how Ian will grow through the experience. He explained that the breakup will lead to Ian realizing that Mickey is important to him.

Wells explains, "It's that thing that often happens when you're younger: You have a relationship that's really difficult and passionate and messy, and then you go away from it and you discover the rest of the world, and sometimes you come back to that first person anyway."

It was revealed that the two will most likely get back together. However, Ian will have to realize that Mickey plays an important role in his life.

'Shameless" season 6 is expected to air on Jan. 17, 2016.
