'Sherlock' Season 4 Release Date, News: 2 Lead Actors Don Victorian Clothes for Upcoming Holiday Special

The sleuth and the doc are back. The dynamic detective duo Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) was shown in the first image released by BBC for the upcoming "Sherlock" special.

The teaser featured the pair donning a Victorian-themed costume with Cumberbatch in a top hat and Freeman in a bowler-style headgear. The pic echoes to the earlier "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" TV adaptation made by Granada Television which runs from 1984 to 1994.

The earlier show starred Jeremy Brett as Holmes and David Burke (later Edward Hardwicke) as Watson.

The image was posted in the BBC One official Twitter account with the hashtag/caption: "#221back #Sherlock #notkidding."

Fans of the hit series were baffled because the photo suggested either time travel to the past or perhaps homage to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original words.

The hype was even more heightened when in the following hour, "Sherlock" showrunner Sue Vertue tweeted a picture showing the read-through draft of the script entitled "Sherlock Special," which as revealed is written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat.

"This is what we've been doing today! Later on a pic of Sherlock and John as they'll appear in the Special #221back," the caption read.

Production for the special is set to begin in January, according to Entertainment Weekly, and that the 3-episode Season 4 will "likely return" on air sometime "in 2015."
