Should I Pray to Find a Husband or Wife?

Seeking for a lifetime partner is natural. It's human nature to look for a special someone for companionship, to trust and know you for who you really are, and someone to take care of and raise a family with. In basic psychology, it is instinctive for man to find a mate to ensure the survival of his genes.

Even God realized this need early on when He said it is not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18), which is why He created woman to serve as helper and companion. Paul also admonished the male believers in Corinth to take a wife because the manly urges cannot be contained (1 Corinthians 7:2).

This search for a spouse is not limited to men. Women are said to be more anxious to find a partner because they have their fertility clock to contend to. Therefore, looking for someone to live happily ever after with is not something to be embarrassed about.

But since this involves a person to spend the rest of one's life with, it's important to carefully select the partner and not just leave everything to gut feel and instinct. Yes, love is a major factor in choosing, but it also has to be in accordance with God's standards. At stake here is your future so it pays to listen.

Praying to find a husband or wife is crucial as God wants you to consult and acknowledge Him in everything you do so He can direct your paths (Proverbs 3:6). The Bible also says to delight yourself in the Lord and He will give the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4).

These guidelines are laid down as God wants to approve your choice of partner. He doesn't want you to be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14) as it will lead to future conflicts and will compromise your faith. A fulfilling and happy life awaits those who submit to His will.
