Snorting Smarties: Latest Trend Among Teens Shocks Parents (VIDEO)

A new trend among teens today involves snorting the round sugary candy Smarties, and there are shocking YouTube videos to prove it.

Parents are reeling over news that kids across the U.S. are crushing the popular candies and then snorting them, but fortunately, Scarborough Middle School in Maine is taking action.

According to an informational document released by the school, snorting Smarties could lead to serious health risks. Furthermore, the document from Scarborough discourages kids from both snorting and "smoking" the candy.

"We have experienced an unsafe new trend among our middle school students- smoking or snorting the candy, Smarties," the informational document reads.

Smoking Smarties involves placing crushed Smarties (a powder-like substance) and attempting to blow it out of the nose. Officials at Scarborough went on to warn that Smarties can "act like razor blades" if not completely crushed, and that snorting the candy could lead to infection and scarring of the nasal cavity.

According to other reports, snorting Smarties could result in maggots infesting children's nasal cavities, internal bleeding and lung infections, reported the Daily Mail.

On YouTube, one video posted six months ago features a young adult snorting an entire crushed Smartie through a rolled up piece of paper.

"That's so bad for you," one person says as laughter is heard in the background.

Another video features a student at her desk snorting Smarties and revealing a "sugar high." Watch it here.

Meanwhile, Twitter users have flooded the social media site with reactions of the snorting Smarties epidemic, with many expressing bewilderment.

"WHAT is wrong with kids these days," Twitter user J wrote. "Just saw high school kids are chopping up Smarties &snorting them."

Estibaliz wrote, "Seriously kids are snorting Smarties INTO their nose? What happened to just coloring on the walls?"

"Snorting Smarties? The youth of American taking stupidity to a new level. Brilliant," wrote Lisa.
