New Spider-Man Movie Release Date News: Sony Pictures Planning New Animated Film

Sony Pictures has announced that thye are enlarging the Spiderman universe with an animated movie that's planned for release in 2018. Executive Tim Rothman revealed the information at the 2015 CinemaCon last week.

The Sony Pictures head also disclosed news that "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie" creators, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be writing and producing the latest Spiderman project.

The new animated production will be billed as an independent movie which won't be included in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, nor will it be a cross-over film related to the Spiderman remake that's due out in theaters in 2017. However, it is intended to co-exist in the same Spidey universe with the live action reboot.

Roth told audiences at CinemaCon that Sony intended to take Spiderman "back to his graphic roots," The Inquisitr reported.

While "The Amazing Spiderman 2" was Sony's lowest grossing film adaptation of the web-slinger, its Spiderman franchise is still the studio's biggest of all time, with the previous five movies earning billions of dollars worldwide.

Sony is hoping to come up with a version to eclipse, or at least come to par with the most popular animated version of Spiderman to date, a 1990 TV cartoon that ran from 1994 to 1998 on Fox.

One of the world's most well-known superheroes, Spiderman first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1962, has been in cartoons beginning in 1967 and several television and live action films since.

While the studio has yet to announced who the directors for the new animated film will be, it has set the movie's release date for July 20, 2018.
