Sony Xperia X Compact Rumors, Release Date and News: Smartphone to Be Released this September? What We Know So Far

Remember Sony Xperia XR - that 5.2-inch, 23MP rear camera flagship wonder whose release we've been waiting for in September?

Well, you might want to shove that dream aside for a moment because another Sony phone may be making its debut alongside the rumored XR in this year's trade show IFA in Berlin.

Mobile reporter Evan Blass has recently leaked a photo of what is currently called the Xperia X Compact. Its design is uncannily close to what Xperia XR supposedly looks like, though we can cross out the assumption that the XR and the X Compact are one and the same.

On the specs front

The Xperia X Compact is rumored to have a 4.6-inch screen and 2,700mAh battery capacity. Specs aren't detailed yet, but reports speculate that both the XR and the X Compact will come with Snapdragon 820 CPU, 4GB of RAM and USB Type-C charging ports.

Leaked images also show that the X Compact has a speaker on both the top and bottom chins. The buttons appear on the lower-right side of the handset.

If history were to repeat itself, then the Xperia X Compact is likely to look and have the same specs as other Sony Compacts. We're talking about the Z3 and the Z5 Compacts, both of which are 4.6-inch handsets with 720p resolutions.

The Sony Compact's philosophy is to pack as much power into pocketable handsets and it's done so perfectly with its last munchkin, the Z5 Compact. It's likely, therefore, that the rumored X Compact will mirror or amp up the Z5 Compact's specs.

Sony Xperia XR

A quick recap of the Xperia XR: Several reports have called it Sony's newest flagship device, following Sony's announcement that it has axed the Z series in June to improve its X line of smartphones. Circulating reports and rumors also refer to the XR as model F8331.

The XR is rumored to feature the same OmniBalance design as with other Sony flagships and sports a brushed metal finish. It's expected to ship with a fingerprint sensor and water-resistant IP68 rating. It's also thought to feature a 1080p screen and 4k video support, and capture for both rear and front shooters.

When will both smartphones launch

Both the Xperia XR and the X Compact are expected to launch during Sony's event in September in Berlin, a rumor which seems to have been confirmed by Sony's Czech website, Techtastic. It also made mention of a Sony "XZ," which could be the rumored XR.
