The higher-end Sony Xperia XZ, sporting flagship specs, will land in the United States a week later on October 2. It will bear a higher price tag of $699.99 for the base model with 32 gigabytes of internal storage.

Specs Breakdown

Both the Sony Xperia XZ and the Xperia X Compact tout an arsenal of top-notch specifications. As a given, Sony has always provided their smartphones with premium build quality, and the same treatment is given to the two. The Xperia XZ ups the ante with an IP68 certification for water resistance and dust proofing.

The 5.2-inch screen of the Xperia XZ has a Full HD 1920 x 1080 display resolution. The Xperia X Compact, on the other hand, sports a 720 x 1280 resolution 5-inch screen. Both are covered by scratch-resistant glass, with IPS LCD and Triluminos Display technologies, and an X-Reality Engine.

On the inside, the Xperia XZ is equipped with the usual Snapdragon 820 chipset coupled with the Adreno 530. The Xperia X Compact gets a Snapdragon 650 processor and the Adreno 510 for the graphics. Both smartphones come with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, with the Xperia XZ coming with an additional 64GB variant. The two smartphones support storage expansion via a microSD.

Sony has long been improving in the camera department. Both Xperia devices come with a 23-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture. They both come with phase detection autofocus and five-axis video stabilization. The Xperia XZ gains an advantage though with the addition of a laser autofocus technology and video recording of up to 4K resolution (with the Xperia X Compact topping at 1080p).

The Xperia XZ easily edges out the Xperia X Compact with its 13-megapixel front-facing camera against a 5-megapixel selfie snapper. Both phones though come with stereo speakers for audio consumption. The larger Xperia XZ also comes with a 2900 mAh batter pack, while the smaller Xperia X Compact packs a 2700 mAh one.

Final Thoughts

However, where Sony's problem lies is with the competition. With companies like OnePlus and ZTE offering the same, and even better flagship specs at a far lower price tag, Sony will have a hard time justifying its price range. Also, the absence of the fingerprint scanner in the US market will surely take a blow. At this point, Sony just hopes to keep its share of the smartphone market through the Xperia XZ and the Xperia X Compact.
