Sony Xperia XZ vs. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Specs Review

The Sony Xperia XZ was launched as one of the company's flagship devices in September last year as their answer to Samsung's Galaxy units, the Galaxy S7 Edge in particular. How does the two stack up in a head-to-head comparison of specs and features?

Starting from the outside, the Sony Xperia XZ comes in Sony's trademark OmniBalance design with sharper angles, while the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a more curved profile. Both devices have metal bodies and are equally rated at an Intrusion Protection rank of 86, a respectable score for water and dust resistance.

The Xperia XZ has its fingerprint sensor on the side power button, while the S7 Edge has its own sensor within the main button on the front. While the Xperia has opted for a USB-Type C port, Samsung's device comes equipped with Micro-USB, as detailed by Pocket Lint.

The S7 Edge is just a tiny bit thinner and lighter, by 0.4 millimeters and 4 grams, respectively, compared with the Xperia XZ.

The S7 Edge comes with a 12 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera, while the Xperia XZ improves on that with a 23 MP main camera and a 13 MP secondary camera. On a side-by-side test by YouTube user ilFranz, the XZ seems to produce better images in most cases, with the S7 Edge having a slight advantage in low-light situations. The feature by International Business Times notes that both are capable of 4K videos at 30 frames per second (fps), HD videos and high dynamic range (HDR) shots.

The Sony Xperia XZ has a 5.2-inch LCD display at Full HD resolution. The S7 Edge beats this with a Quad HD display using super active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) technology on a curved screen, which makes it brighter, sharper and more colorful than the Sony device.

The S7 Edge and the Xperia XZ both use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, with the Samsung device packing 4 GB of RAM compared with Sony's 3 GB. The S7 Edge also wins out with its 3,700 mAh battery compared with the Xperia XZ with its 2,900 mAh pack.
