Soulja Boy has drawn the ire of some fans who did not approve of the 22-year-old rapper and producer posting image of the drug codeine on Instagram. The picture came only days after fellow rapper Lil Wayne reportedly suffered seizures using it.
While TMZ reported that Lil Wayne was placed in intensive care following an overdose on the drug that may rappers refer to as "syrup," Soulja Boy, the rapper who was born DeAndre Cortez, was blasted on Twitter for casually posing for pictures with the same drug.
One fan took to Twitter to rip Cortez while scolding the rapper about Lil Wayne's alleged recent overdose.
"Who the hell thinks drinking cough syrup is cool?!?!? ... Look at lil Wayne had to have his stomach pumped 3x cause that damn cough syrup (expletive)" the person tweeted.
Another individual followed the same sentiments after witnessing the 22-year-old rapper's image that featured marijuana, the cough syrup bottle and some fried chicken.
"Soulja Boy gotta leave the syrup alone," the person tweeted.
After 30-year-old rap mogul Lil Wayne was hospitalized for his alleged overdose on the drug, news outlets like ABC investigated the mixture of promethazine and codeine that some people mix with alcohol or soda. Ronald Peters, an associate professor of behavioral sciences at the University of Texas Health Center, told ABC News that the "sippin syrup" trend became popular in Texas.
"It is still considered to be the champagne and caviar of drugs here in Houston," Peters told ABC.
Although several media outlets like TMZ initially reported that Lil Wayne suffered multiple seizures at the hands of the drug, his team has denied such claims. Bryan "Birdman" Williams, Lil Wayne's industry mentor, told New York City radio station Hot 97 that the rapper's seizures were the result of overworking, not drug use.
"To me, it's how he works. He works around the clock," Birdman told New York City Radio Station Hot 97. "He's just a hard grinder for this music. But it wasn't nothing about no drugs."
