Spider-Man Movie Latest News, Cast Rumors: To Finally Join Marvel Superheroes; Studio to Cast New Peter Parker

A deal has finally been struck: Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios will now feature the web-slinging Spider-Man in a yet-to-be-specified Marvel cinematic universe film.

Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, announced the news. The Walt Disney Company owns Marvel Entertainment.

"We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building," he said. "This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans."

"Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker's story into the future," Doug Belgrad the President Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, told Marvel.com.

The deal, however, doesn't mean that Sony is giving up the film rights to the character.

As it was clarified that once the character has been relaunched, Sony will then take over to release a new "Spider-Man" movie franchise which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will kick off on July 28, 2017.

Marvel's Kevin Feige will be joined with Amy Pascal to produce the upcoming superhero flick. The two, together with Ari Arad and Matt Tolmach will collaborate to bring forth a "new creative direction" for the friendly neighborhood.

Variety.com meanwhile tacked on the question raised of what would become of its recent actor Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker/Spider-Man in two-part reboot series "The Amazing Spider-Man."

As it was revealed, Garfield won't be reprising the role.

"The next step for Sony, of course, is to recast Spider-Man. The studio is looking to go back to Spidey's roots and put the character back in high school, which would require it to cast a younger actor," Variety said.
