'Squadron 42' News and Updates: 'Star Citizen' Spin-Off Will Not be Released in 2016; Reason Behind Delay and Other Updates Revealed

A lot of fans are very much disappointed upon learning that the anticipated standalone single player campaign set of "Star Citizen", the "Squadron 42", will not be released this year.

"Squadron 42" Delayed

"Squadron 42" was originally planned to be a campaign mode set within "Star Citizen" from publisher Cloud Imperium Games. However, due to the growing fan clamor for the game, the publisher eventually decided to make "Squadron 42" a standalone spinoff on its own.

With all these interesting developments in "Squadron 42", the game was initially planned to be released this year. However, it was announced at the CitizenCon 2016 that the game's official launching would ultimately be delayed.

Cause of Delay

Chris Roberts, the creator of the game, had attributed the delay of "Squadron 42" to the mere size and scope of the game. Being a standalone game, there are much more elements needed to be developed, which were not foreseen during the 2012 game pitching. Even the main story of the game needs to be laid out first, disallowing Cloud Imperium Games to showcase a mission during the event.

Also, with the crowdfunding model having raised over $127 million, the creator said that the developers aim to do the game right. With this, the release of "Squadron 42" needs a lot more time than initially projected, so as not to end up with a half-baked video game just to meet the planned launch date.

Roberts also said that the developers also do not want to rush the release of "Squadron 42" in time for the holiday season, much like what other developers do. They do not want to rely on patches and updates to fix the bugs in the game if they release it before it is actually ready. However, the creator added that there would definitely be patches and downloadable content for the final version to further enhance the gaming experience.

With the polished version of "Squadron 42" still in the works, Roberts had promised to deliver the finalized version of the game in the near future. He even promised to showcase a completed mission once it comes to fruition. This mission could be shown before the year ends, but no exact time frame was committed to. There was also no new release date provided for the delayed "Squadron 42".

"Star Citizen" Updates

During his presentation at the CitizenCon 2016, Roberts had also detailed the upcoming updates for the "Star Citizen". The update 3.3 will be adding farming features as the headliner, along with other additional content. He also demonstrated the procedural generation of planets in the game. This then included a segment showing a giant sand worm.

After four years since its crowdfunding campaign, "Star Citizen" still remains unreleased. However, there have been modular components that are offered to the public.
