Square Enix to Bring More Long-Term Multiplayer Titles as They Move Forward Using the 'Games as Service' Model

Square Enix has promised more multiplayer games to come as they further embrace the concept of "games as service."

When it comes to making games nowadays, the common trend for most developers is to create games that could exist in long-term. Avid gamers and spectators may have noticed that most games today as further prolonged by adding DLCs (downloadable content) or maybe even a sequel just to expand the game. Doing so can sometimes make the first game feel less special for players. Thankfully, Square Enix is having none of that

Square Enix had previously revealed in May that the company is leaning towards the "games as a service" model, which is basically geared towards designing games that give focus on long-term user engagement. This has been exceedingly evident with the company's "Final Fantasy XV," which is steadily growing with more content for players to enjoy. Now, Square Enix president Yousuke Matsuda had once again given emphasis the direction their company is headed to.

"Gone are the days in which single-player games were of primary status and multiplayer games secondary," Matsuda said in a Twitter post via @Nibellion. "Lately, multiplayer games have taken the lead, and it is standard for games to be designed for long-term play," he added.

The main idea is to create games people would play for a longer period of time, even repetitively, rather than playing them once and then moving off to the next game title. According to Matsuda, this act would increase customer satisfaction as well as the lifetime value of the game.

Just like with "Final Fantasy XV," which now has a number of premium and free DLCs and another one coming next month, this has resulted in giving more replay value to the game and now, Square Enix is aiming to give more of that experience to the games they would be developing in the future.
