'Star' Season 2 News: Musical Drama Gets Extended Order From Fox

Fox is showing more confidence in its sophomore musical series, "Star."

The network has ordered five additional episodes of the girl-group drama executive produced by Lee Daniels. According to reports, the pickup brings "Star's" latest installment to 18 episodes in total, the full length of a usual season for Daniels' hit series on Fox, "Empire."

"Star" originally debuted from the midseason finale of "Empire" last year. For a large part of its freshman run, the program took over "Empire's" time slot and was paired with another rookie drama, "Lethal Weapon."

News of the extended order does not come as a huge surprise since "Star" posted good numbers during its season 2 premiere. Thanks to the lead-in provided by "Empire," the show kicked off season 2 with a 2.4 rating in the 18–49 demo in Nielsen live-plus-seven numbers. Seven-day multiplatform numbers from Fox, on the other hand, indicated that the season 2 premiere garnered an average of 7.5 million viewers.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Daniels said he did not expect his two shows to be scheduled on the same night. "All eyes are on us now. I guess that was a message from the universe for me to really amp up my game with 'Star,'" he shared.

On next week's episode, will see the girls take the opportunity to perform at the record label party. Things take a turn for the worse when they find out that Rachel (Paris Jackson) was hired by Ayanna (Michael Michele) to work as the company's new social media strategist.

Elsewhere, Derek (Quincy Brown) struggles to accept the truth about his future. Cotton (Amiyah Scott) forms a closer bond with her father, Jahil (Benjamin Bratt), over their shared suffering, while Carlotta (Queen Latifah) tries to find peace.

The second season of "Star" airs every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
