'Star Trek' New TV Series - The Updates: Fans React to Starship Discovery on Social Media, 2017 Season Air Date Announced

Star Trek TV series features a totally new star ship with a design that seems not too convincing for fans.

Star Trek fans got a taste of what the new Star Trek TV series is going to be like at the recently-concluded Comic-Con 2016 San Diego. Followers of the franchise also had the chance to get to know the next starship which will be officially called the U.S.S. Discovery with a designation NCC – 1031.

Based on the original Star Trek movie

Fans were told that the Discovery was actually from concept art created by Ralph McQuarrie for the first ever Star Trek movie. Bryan Fuller also told fans: "What the new series has to do is continue to be progressive, [to] push boundaries and tell stories in the legacy Gene Roddenberry promised, giving us hope for the future."

Fans react to the new starship

Star Trek fans used social media to share what they thought about the USS Discovery. Some fans loved the "hot" designs saying that it's ready to take on anything in space. Others were not so sure.

Die-hard Star Trek followers said that the design was clunky and was not what they expected from the use of updated CGI. Fans reacted in disbelief saying that the creators may have quickly thrown the design together because it was not what they had in mind.

A few popular reactions from fans:

From Alakaboem: "Hot damn, looks like a Starfleet – Klingon fusion (and drop-dead gorgeous). Imagine a ship crewed by an Alliance group or something… that could be cool."

From TheRazorsEdge: "I am sooo not sure what to make of this! It's extraordinarily puzzling to me that the new ship's design is very clearly based on Ralph McQuarrie's TMP Enterprise design.

It's an odd choice, but I suspect I can live with it, given the production and writing talent behind this show. Really, really, really hoping this was just a quickly thrown together rough look at the new ship, as that wasn't the best of intros, quality-wise."

From Tom_Has_Doubts: "Wow. Between Star Wars and Star Trek, Ralph McQuarrie has a professional afterlife like few other designers and illustrators. His ideas are being used to this day and Disney/Lucasfilm will be pulling extensively from his aesthetic for years to come."

Still some are more optimistic than others:

From OtherGonzo: "OK, I'm going to have to pull my "old Trekkie" card out and let you know that many people hated the design of the Enterprise D when TNG first started. I think we will grow to love this new ship."

From miket10: "IMO, the JJprise is ugly. I can live with this ship. Looks like a Federation/Klingon hybrid."

Show is more than the ship

Most of the scenes from any Star Trek movie or television show are within their respective star ships but most fans say that they want to know more about the plot and characters of the show since Star Trek is more than just the ship. More updates will surely be released as the show nears its air date.
