'Star Wars: Episode VIII' News: John Boyega on Potential Rey-Finn Romance; Rey, 'The Emperor's Granddaughter'?

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" breakout star John Boyega has addressed the rumors of a possible romance between his character, Finn, and co-star Daisy Ridley's Rey in the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VIII."

Speaking to Variety at the Cannes Film Festival, Boyega said that the hotly anticipated "Episode VIII" will do the seemingly unthinkable, becoming even "bigger" and "darker" than "Episode VII," which quickly became one of the biggest box office successes of all time.

Asked if the romance between Rey and Finn will evolve in "Episode VIII," the next chapter in the new "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, the actor answered, "[W]e didn't establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way."

"Daisy and I, we're friends," he added.

Explaining the dynamic between the two "Star Wars" lead characters in the upcoming "Episode VIII," Boyega said, "Yes, Finn and Rey – they're just friends."

"Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn't really know what's going on," he explained. "So the romance thing is something that's going to be interesting in the next installment. It's not going to go the way you think it's going to go."

Meanwhile, a new Reddit post has added fuel to the speculation frenzy about Rey's parentage in the "Star Wars" universe. While many have surmised that Rey, the saga's new heroine, is the daughter of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the Reddit poster claims that Rey's ancestry is decidedly more sinister.

The user wrote about some supposedly key scenes from the upcoming installment. In one, Rey and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) are in the midst of a lightsaber battle when Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) intervenes and speaks to Rey. He tells her that her "destiny lies with him" and that the dark side is "in her blood."

Snoke then reveals that Rey's grandfather was the former Emperor and that Luke killed her parents. According to Snoke, Luke also intended on killing Rey before others successfully hid her.

The Reddit user also claims that "Episode VIII" will be titled "Heir of Darkness."

"Star Wars: Episode VIII" will be released December 15, 2017.
