'Star Wars Rebels,' New Animated Series, Coming to Disney in the Fall of 2014

Disney announced that a new one-hour animated series, "Star Wars Rebels," is scheduled to debut in the fall of 2014 on the Disney Channel.

The pilot, which is already in production at Lucasfilm studios, will be a brand new thread in the Star Wars franchise. After premiering, it will be moved to Disney XD for the remainder of the series, according to Lucasfilm sources.

The series will be based on the events from the end of "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" and follow though until the time preceding "Episode IV: A New Hope." It will focus on the lives of the Skywalker twins after their separation, until they are reunited in the prison section of the Death Star.

The series carries with it three executive producers who are all highly regarded for their previous work. Dave Filoni, who developed The Clone Wars animated series that launched in 2008 will work alongside screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg. Kinberg, known for his edgy work in rebranding various animated series, will also work in unison with Greg Weisman, who has been previously praised for his work with "The Spectacular Spider-Man" series.

"I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe. I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel, and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars," Kathy Kennedy, Lucasfilm President, revealed in a press release.

Kennedy was groomed for the role heading Lucasfilm since George Lucas stepped down. She has been highly regarded in the entertainment industry since the 1980s stemming from her work as a producer of Jurassic Park and Schindler's List.

Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney last fall for $4 billion.
