'Star Wars Rebels' Season 2 News: New Trailer Reveals Ties To 'The Force Awakens'

The CGI animated series "Star Wars Rebels" is coming back to Disney XD on January 20, but before its return, it dropped a new trailer which not only features scenes from the rest of the episodes in Season 2, but also a "surprising link" to "The Force Awakens," according to a report in Entertainment Weekly.

The three-minute trailer starts with a female voice saying, "To defeat your enemy, you have to understand them," followed by a scene where Darth Vader enters a chamber where two of his minions await. In the next few scenes, the voice of Kanan Jarrus (voiced by Freddie Prinze, Jr.) talks about how much harder it is for his team, the crew of the "Ghost," to go around the galaxy as the Empire seems to be everywhere they are, making it almost impossible for them to help the rebels establish a base of operations to fight the Empire. The trailer also showed some reinforcements courtesy of Senator Organa helping out in the rebellion.

The trailer also featured a young Princess Leia (voiced by Julie Dolan) who - despite her ties with the Empire - is helping out the crew of the "Ghost" and the rebellion. According to EW, the princess will be appearing in only one episode, which is the upcoming episode titled, "A Princess on Lothal" which airs on January 20. In the trailer, she is seen talking to Ezra Bridger (voiced by Taylor Gray) where she says, "I feel like because I can fight, I have to, for those who cannot. And I think you might be the same way."

Ahsoka also appears in the trailer in what looked like a duel between her and her former master Anakin Skywalker, who is now Darth Vader.

The latter part of the trailer focuses on one of the show's main protagonists, Ezra, who has Force abilities that seem to be growing as time passes by. This seems to be one of the main storylines that the rest of the season will follow, as he deals with his powers and his admiration for Anakin Skywalker, which may or may not lead him to the Dark Side.

The link to "The Force Awakens" story has to do with Ezra wielding a crossguard lightsaber similar to that of Kylo Ren's, except his lightsaber emitted green light and looked "sturdier."
