'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Release Date News: Trailer, New Posters, Character List (VIDEO)

The J.J. Abrams-helmed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" just released its second official teaser trailer Thursday.

A new teaser trailer for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," was released April 16, giving fans of the franchise a glimpse of what to expect when the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel makes its theater debut on Dec. 18 this year.

The trailer opens to the voice of Luke Skyalker talking about how strong the force is in his family, and gives a hint he is telling a child, speculated to be either of Princess Leia's children, Jacen or Jana Solo, about the possessing that same power.

On the screen, audiences are treated to a desolate desert landscape setting scarred by war set in a period following Episode VI after Darth Vader kills Emperor Palpatine. A dogfight inside the crashed hulk of an Imperial Star Destroyer and a chromed Stormtrooper, presumably an important character, is featured, as well as the appearance of an older Han Solo (Harrison Ford) with Chewbacca, who declares joyfully they have finally arrived home.

The release of the new trailer coincides with the Star Wars Celebration, a fan convention in Anaheim, California, where original "Star Wars" actors Carrie Fisher and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) are slated to attend together with Abrams.

Meanwhile, three new posters have been unveiled yesterday featuring characters from the movie: Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren and dozens of stormtroopers. The posters have gone viral on social media with speculations about their source.

Making Star Wars has also posted a complete list of the characters that will be appearing in the movie, which will include the original characters, Han Solo, Leia Organa Solo, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2, with the addition of Rey/Kira, Finn, Kylo, Ren, and Poe Dameron, among the major cast of characters.

The cast from the first three original movies, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford will also star in the new film. Whether Abrams' "The Force Awakens" will cure fans' woes and complaints over the three prequels of Episodes I to III remains to be seen.
