Steve Wozniak: Apple Did Not Start in Garage, Story Was A Myth

The co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak has debunked the stories that the Apple was first conceived at the garage of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Wozniak was the one who built the first ever Apple I kit back in 1976, managing to sell it at $666.66, and the Apple II back in 1977. Despite the commonly assumed story that the Apple and the Mac were created at Jobs' garage, Wozniak came forward to admit it was all "a bit of a myth."

During an interview for Businessweek, Wozniak shared the truth, saying they did not do any work at the garage of Jobs' 2066 Crist Drive home in Los Altos, California.

"We did no designs there, no breadboarding, no prototyping, no planning of products. We did no manufacturing there," he said. He explained that while the garage did not serve any purpose as to their creations, it was more of a home for their penniless team.

"You have to work out of your home when you have no money," Wozniak said.

During the interview with Brandon Lisy, Wozniak also reminisced about the creation of Apple, saying he did most of his work at his cubicle at Hewlett-Packard in Cupertino, California. He also claimed that when they were starting out their company, he already had the feeling that the computer was "so far ahead of anything the rest of the world had ever seen."

Wozniak also talked about co-founder Jobs, saying Jobs was a person that wanted to move the world forward, but did not have the skills to create and design these like Wozniak could. However, Jobs was strong, forceful and had the "best brain," and his suggestions were almost always right.

"Steve founds the words that explained what these computers would do for people and how important it was a little later in life," he said.

Whether the garage in California is important or not, the story has ensured that Jobs' garage be listed as a historical site in 2013. The same went for the garage in Palo Alto where the Hewlett-Packard company was founded.
