The movie is based on an adaptation of a short story of the same title penned by Ted Chiang, which won the Nebula Award for Short Novella in 2000 and was also nominated for a Hugo Award. The movie script was written by Eric Heisserer as early as late 2012 under FilmNation Entertainment.

Denis Villeneuve, who recently signed on to direct the "Blade Runner" sequel, will direct "Story of Your Life." Three production companies will be involved: FilmNation, Lava Bear Pictures and 21 Laps.

Renner will add this movie to his growing list of action movies in 2015 and 2016, such as "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Captain America: Civil War," and "Mission: Impossible 5." Adams on the other hand is busy with "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice," reprising her role as Lois Lane.

Paramount Pictures picked up the North American rights to "Story of Your Life." Sony got distribution rights in all territories except the UK, Australia, India, Israel, the Middle East, Greece and Turkey. These will be handled by smaller film distribution companies.
