'Suicide Squad' Cast Rumors, Update: Actress Margot Robbie to Play the Joker's Girlfriend, Harley Quinn

After the news surrounding Jared Leto's purported involvement as the Joker in the upcoming David Ayer superhero film "Suicide Squad" comes another cast rumor pointing out Australian actress Margot Robbie playing another DC Universe supervillain, Harley Quinn.

The report, perpetuated by Collider, stated that the 24-year-old star will become a part of the franchise and would take on the role of Joker's frequent accomplice and lover.

Rumors of Robbie's involvement came right after Jared Leto's own string of talks, who, as of today, still hasn't gave a word whether or not he will join the cast list for "Suicide Squad" or any future DC films.

Meanwhile, both Warner Bros and DC have no comment on the report.

Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn, is a relatively new addition to the Batman canon. Having first appeared in the "Batman: The Animated Series" episode titled "Joker's Favor," the Arkham Asylum psychiatrist instantly gained popularity among fans that she was eventually added in the comic book canon.

Outside the pulp world, Harley Quinn's look and demeanor has also become a staple in most female cosplay costumes.

Robbie, on the other hand, made a breakout in her screen career when she was cast as Naomi Lapaglia in Martin Scorcese's "Wolf of Wall Street."

Entertainment Weekly also stated that Robbie is currently filming for a 2016 Tarzan movie where she will take up the role of Jane. She is also slated to appear alongside Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor in a post-nuclear war film "Z is for Zachariah" in 2015.

"Suicide Squad" is scheduled to arrive in theaters August 5, 2016.
