'Super Mario Odyssey' Boasts Its Original Momentum and Speed

The year 2017 is shaping up to be a wonderful time for Nintendo to go all out, especially with the launch of the new Nintendo Switch and its exclusive "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild." It won't be a complete Nintendo experience, however, if it didn't bring its iconic mascot Mario, who is set to return with "Super Mario Odyssey."

In the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 trailer, audiences were provided with a first glimpse into the exciting and colorful world of Mario. He is seen sprinting through a seemingly vast world with lots of heights and details while employing some of his well-known maneuvers, which are primarily running and jumping.

There are a few notable additions, such as double-jumps, riding what looks like a ceramic lion, and most obviously throwing his hat that helps him reach more locations as it serves as a springboard. Despite all the new things that are added to the experience, he still remains his jolly and clumsy self, which is a nostalgic trip to the classic.

This is something that Games Radar appreciates a lot. While there are a few new skills for Mario to use in the upcoming title, he is still depicted as his old self, a character who relies on his momentum and speed. It's very noticeable that there are little to no power ups in the sequence, making players invest more time to the actual controls and master it carefully.

While that is true, the fact that the new Mario installment is a 3D platformer comes as a concern, A 90's Kid says. The title works in 2D because one can control the angles and movement better, not worrying about camera angles. This is going to be something that will be looked at when it finally arrives, and hopefully it makes the game seamless instead of tedious.

"Super Mario Odyssey" arrives on the Nintendo Switch in holiday 2017.
