Nintendo announced this morning that Sega's beloved mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, will be joining the fracas of Super Smash Bros 4.

During today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, President Satoru Iwata made the confirmation after months of speculation.

This will be Sonic's second time in the Smash Bros series after first appearing in Super Smash Brawl for the Wii.

Both Sonic and MegaMan are in the game as the only third party non-Nintendo characters. In the last installment of the game, Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid was with Sonic as the other non-Nintendo representative. There has been no word as to whether Snake will be coming back to the series.

Some consider Mario, Sonic, and MegaMan to be the "trinity" of gaming as these three have been waging their own wars on different consoles and in sales for over 20 years. Now for the first time, gamers can actually have them duke it out.

Nintendo's last announcement was the return of Toon Link from the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

Regular Link has been in all four installations of the Super Smash series, and Young Link was in the second game, Melee. Toon Link was in the previous installment, Brawl.

Last week Nintendo revealed Super Mario's Princess Peach would be returning to the game.

Other mainstays to the game include: Mario, Luigi, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Pit.

New characters for the game include: the Villager from Animal Crossing, Wii Fit Trainer, Pikmin & Olimar from Pikmin

This will be the first installment of the game that will also be available for handheld as well as the main console.

The release date is unknown, but the game is expected to be ready for the Wii U and 3DS in early 2014.
