Superman will visit in the early episodes of Season 2. Hoechlin said that he feels a sense of "responsibility" playing the role of a character that is not only generational, but something that "literally spreads across so much time."

Melissa Benoist appeared in Season 4 and 5 in Glee (2009). She also appeared in some TV series, including "The Good Wife" (2009) and "Homeland" (2011).

At San Diego's Comic-Con international, Benoist said that Superman's arrival in Season 2 is perfectly timed. She said that while Superman and Supergirl interacted last season through text and instant messaging, meeting in person is important because both are family and can "reap benefits from each other."

At Comic-Con, executive produce Sarah Schechter explained why Superman appeared in Season 2. She said that Season 1 was "about Kara and it's about Supergirl. This show is about family and it's about the family that you make as an adult and this family that's come together and then it's also about the family you came from [and] we have Clark to represent that family. I think it's only natural now that Kara reconnects with him."

Superman Costume

A new picture of Supergirl Season 2 shows Supergirl, played by Melissa Benoist, standing beside Superman.
The Superman costume is designed by Kiersten Ronning, who also designed Supergirl's costume. The outfit is similar to that worn by Superman in "Man of Steel," played by Henry Cavill, or the one in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In all these modern Superman films, the classic red shorts don't exist. Instead, the modernized design is all blue across the legs with a red belt instead of red shorts.

The newly released photo showing Superman and Supergirl side by side drew mixed reactions from fans and news reporters. According to Kaitlin Thomas of TV Guide, Superman looks disproportionate or heavily edited; e.g. the chest seems to be too large or the face too thin.

The show started filming on July 26 at a set in British Columbia, Canada. Melissa Benoit was seen on the set carrying her puppy Mili, as she was wearing her Supergirl costume.
