A Look Back at the Actors Who Played Superman

Fans are already screaming with joy upon the latest news that the Man of Steel will be seen on "Supergirl." Young actor Tyler Hoechlin from the TV series "Teen Wolf" was chosen to be the next to wear the glorious red cape and blue tights.

Looking back, only a handful of actors were given the opportunity of prestige, power of flight and superhuman strength. Let's take a look at the actors who portrayed the beloved superhero, Superman.

Kirk Alyn
"Superman" (1948)

Kirk Alyn was famously known as the first actor to portray Superman on the big screen. The "Superman" film was directed by Thomas Carr and features a black-and-white action adventure based on the comic book of the same title. Alyn portrayed Superman as a light and mild-mannered hero that loves to fly around and save the city.

George Reeves
"Adventures of Superman" (1952-1958)

George Reeves was known to be the first star to play the iconic role of Superman on television from 1952 to 1958. Reeves have taken the small screen by storm not only by his superpowers, but also through his charming and confident personality.

Christopher Reeves
"Superman: The Movie" (1978), "Superman II" (1980), "Superman III" (1983), "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" (1987)

One of the most beloved and successful actors who portrayed Superman is Christopher Reeves, who sets up the bar for playing distinct roles of Clark Kent and Superman. He was one of the reasons that makes fans believe that anyone can be fooled by a pair of glasses and a suit.

John Haymes Newton
"Superboy: (1988)

Best known as the "young superhero," Newton portrays Superman in his early young and college days. It's a bit unique as it tackles relationships and school matters together with the daily duties of saving the city.

Tom Welling
"Smallville" (2001-2011)

The young, indecisive Clark Kent(Tom Welling) portrays his role like any other teenager who lacked a sense of responsibility but later on accepts his duties as a superhero. The series ran for an impressive 10 years with 10 episodes. Its finale aired on May 13, 2011.

Brandon Routh
"Superman Returns" (2006)

Brandon Routh showed the masses a sincere and thoughtful portrayal of Superman. The critics praised the film for its story and visual effects, but received mixed reviews from its audiences, with the majority pointing out on its lack of action sequences.

Henry Cavill
"Man of Steel" (2013), "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016)

Henry Cavill wows the crowd as he brings an amazing portrayal of an enigmatic and serious Clark Kent from a dutiful and brave Superman. The "Man of Steel" movie offered spectacular visual effects that left critics and audiences praising the action sequence and overall style. However, Superman's lack of character development was also criticized. Nevertheless, Cavill is without doubt, one of the best actors to have ever played the superhero as he lifts "The Man of Steel" to the table of highest-grossing Superman film of all time.
