'Supernatural' Season 11 News, Cast, Spoilers: John Winchester's Appearance Was Also a Surprise to Jared Padalecki

"Supernatural" has always had a charm that many fans keep coming back for more. Apart from the endearing brotherly bond of Sam and Dean Winchester, it's also the unexpected special episodes that keep the show interesting even when it has already entered its 11th season. The latest episode entitled "Baby" featured an episode dedicated to the Impala, which has definitely made an impact on the boys' lives. However, more than that, the surprise appearance of John Winchester, Sam and Dean's father, also made fans squeal a bit. Although the viewers saw the younger John, played by Matt Cohen, it seems satisfying enough in the meantime until Jeffrey Dean Morgan finally decides to make an appearance.

According to TV Line, the surprise guesting of Cohen was not only a surprise to the fans but to Jared Padalecki as well, who recalls his performance to be all genuine. To keep the surprise under wraps, he explains that production had to go through different lengths to keep Cohen's identity a secret, he shares, "On the call sheet, they didn't want to put Matt Cohen, so they put Leonard Cohen in case anybody picked it up," Padalecki adds, "I was like, 'That's not going to be suspicious! Oh, Leonard Cohen is doing a guest spot on Supernatural. He's going to play the troubadour."

Padalecki also says that the idea to use Cohen instead of Morgan made it more special because it turned the whole scene with him to be much more meaningful. "It was a really neat thing to do to use him instead of Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who I also love, because it puts Sam in an even more awkward position. It wasn't the dad that he knew, so it had Sam really unawares… It was just such a well-thought out and well-executed script," shared Padalecki .

Although perhaps acting alongside Cohen unexpectedly may have left Padalecki surprised, he claims to see a lot of him, especially during conventions. "Supernatural is such a unique show because even though [Cohen] hasn't been on the show in five years, we still see each other several times a year," Padalecki then jokes about seeing Cohen more than his own brother. "I don't see my brother 10 times a year, but I see a lot of our guest cast. So he's a buddy. He just became a dad. Most of the time, they call 'Cut!' and we'll be like, 'What's going on? How's the baby? How's the wife?'"

"Supernatural" season 11 airs every Wednesday on The CW.
