Taylor Swift, Actress? Singer Joins 'The Giver'

Taylor Swift reportedly joined the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of "The Giver" alongside Meryl Streep and Katie Holmes this week.

The "I Knew You Were Trouble" singer has appeared in cameos before, but the role in "The Giver" would mark her first major acting role.

If the rumor proves to be true, Swift will head to South Africa later this year to begin filming the movie, which is based off of the 1993 book by Lois Lowry.

The Weistein Company's Harvey Weinstein made a statement about the film on Friday.

"The Giver has always been a favorite book of mine and my kids'," said the co-chairman. "We could not have assembled more impressive cast for this project behind Lois Lowry's beautiful novel and the directorial talents of Phil Noyce, and are tremendously excited to commence production."

Other rumors about the cast of "The Giver" include reports that "True Blood" star Alexander Skarsgard is in talks to join the film, according to MTV News.

Swift made her film debut in 2010's "Valentine's Day" in a quick scene beside then-boyfriend Taylor Lautner. The Grammy Award-winning singer also provided her voice in the film "The Lorax."

Meanwhile, "The Giver" will also star Australian actor Brenton Thwaites, whom Swift was spotted "talking for hours" to during the Toronto Film Festival.

"They seemed very into each other," an onlooker told Us magazine.

However, a second source said that Swift was talking with Thwaites, but that she circulated the room as well. The 24-year-old actor attended the Toronto Film Festival promoting his film "Oculus."

"She talked to several people, and he was one of them," said the insider.

Nevertheless, Thwaites is an up-and-coming actor who will appear in the forthcoming blockbuster "Maleficent" alongside Angelina Jolie.
