Former megachurch pastor Ted Haggard will appear in a Christian sex comedy that is being developed in Colorado Springs.

Haggard, who resigned from New Life Church in Colorado Spring following a drug and sex scandal in 2006, makes a cameo as himself in a film called "The Waiting Game" that promotes abstinence before marriage.

The movie is about a guy who saves himself for marriage but later becomes determined to lose his virginity after his fiance dumps him at the altar on their wedding day.

In one scene, the guy wrestles with his decision to stay abstinent and tells a friend over coffee that he no longer wants to wait until marriage to have sex.

"I'm so frustrated. You know what? I'm just going to do what I want to do anyways. It's not like it's going to wind up on the front page of the newspaper," he says.

Ted Haggard, who made headlines after the scandal, overhears their conversation from a nearby cafe table and interjects.

"Hey Buddy, I wouldn't do that if I were you," Haggard tells him.

Before the scandal broke, Haggard was the president of the National Association of Evangelicals. But after he admitted to "sexual immorality," the former top evangelical leader lost both his post at the megachurch he founded and at the NAE.

The producers of the movie said they are taking cue from popular comedies and adapting them into something palatable for Christian audiences.

"I love all the Judd Apatow movies – ‘40 Year Old Virgin,’ ‘Knocked Up,’ ‘Superbad’ – they’re all great,” Rich Praytor, a co-producer and co-writer of the film, told The Gazette.

“So we wanted to take something like that into the Christian arena.”

Another well-known name is also attached to the project. Candace Cameron, who played older sister D.J. Tanner in the television series “Full House," plays the guy's eventual love interest in the film.

Praytor and his movie partner Emilio Martinez have drafted several versions of the script and put together a trailer posted on YouTube, The Gazette reported.

The pair is trying to raise $2 million toward the movie, according to the Colorado-based paper. If the funds are raised, they would start shooting on Sept. 1.
