At the end of the fourth season, Derek Hale, played by Tyler Hoechlin, did not leave Mexico with Scott McCall, portrayed by Tyler Posey, along with the rest of the main cast members. Chris Argent, played by JR Bourne, also did not leave Mexico as he had made a pact with his sister Kate Argent, played by Jill Wagner, who is now on the run.

"Derek walked off into the sunset, and he could easily wake up the next morning and go get Starbucks or Lydia could have magically have joined Jackson in London. We don't know," Roden pointed out. "It's sort of a toss up of who is not coming back for season five, but somebody is not coming back for season five."

The series' story revolves around Scott, who was bit by a werewolf. He must then find a way to cope with how this affects his life as well as the lives of those closest to him.
