Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Release Date, Plot Spoilers: Sequel Gets 2016 Premiere

This summer's reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is still showing in theatres, but recently, it has been confirmed that a sequel to the movie has been greenlit.

Paramount has announced that on the back of the massive opening for the film, they have begun the process of developing the sequel. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" earned $65 million at the box office during the opening week.

"To know movie goers are embracing the Turtles with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for. We are thrilled with this weekend's result, the enduring power of this franchise, and the opportunity to make another one," said Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey.

Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec are returning to pen the film's next installment, which is set to premiere in 2016. Michael Bay is also onboard to produce with his Platinum Dunes partners. It has not been confirmed if Jonathan Liebesman will return to direct the film.

The website reports that Paramount seems to be weighing its options as to who will be directing the sequel, given that critics were unkind to the film, and the movie reportedly garnered a Cinemascore of "B."

Still, the film continues to rake in the earnings as it is reported that it could reach a total of $200 million in the U.S., not to mention overseas gross earnings.

As for the sequel, the producers are reportedly in talks to bring in characters like Bebop and Rocksteady. The actors who voiced the Turtles will also be coming back for the film, as well as Megan Fox.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2" is slated to premiere on June 3, 2016.
