Tesla confirms release of Model X in September

Tesla Motors Inc. is set to release the Model X within the next six weeks, and more reports about the new electric car's specs have surfaced.

Tesla said the Model X will be released before September 2016 ends. Elon Musk, the company's chief, assured shareholders that Tesla will be able to hit its target release date for the Model X, according to Learn Bonds.

As of now, a test run for the Model X is being cooked up, and engineers will soon be checking the vehicle for flaws. In a letter to Tesla shareholders, Musk said he does not expect the vehicle to be mass produced until the last quarter of 2016. But by then, production for the Model X will be on full blast, BGR reports.

"As we prepare to launch Model X in September, we are building more validation vehicles, executing final engineering and testing work, enabling our new manufacturing equipment and finalizing arrangements with our suppliers," BGR quotes Musk in his letter to Tesla shareholders. "We have been producing release candidate Model X bodies in our new body shop equipped with more than 500 robots as we fine-tune and validate our production processes."

Model X is expected to be 10 percent heavier compared to the Model S. The cheapest Model X will have a travel capacity of over 200 miles, and the most expensive one will most likely take customers to more than 250 miles on full battery pack.

The upcoming Tesla electric vehicle will feature standard all-wheel drive, and will run on two electric motors. It will also be the first of the company's car that will have a tow bar option of around 10,000 pounds. This will enable the Model X to transport a very heavy load, the report details.

The new Tesla SUV will have a seating capacity of seven full-grown adults, and all passengers will be able to sit comfortably with their luggage. Musk adds that the "sculptural" second row will be one of the major selling points of the Model X. Customers will have to wait and see if the Model X lives up to this claim.

As for the color variants of the Model X, Tesla has still not revealed the options.

As of now, Tesla has already received more than 24,000 reservation requests for the Model X. The report attributes the car's increased popularity to the company's more aggressive marketing strategy and the higher appeal of an SUV compared with a sedan-type vehicle.
