Texas Court Shooting Leaves Elderly Woman Dead, Several Injured

An elderly woman is dead and at least two people seriously wounded after being shot by a man who opened fire outside of a Texas court house.

The deadly shooting took place outside of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont, Texas about 80 miles east of Houston.

While officials were able to confirm that at least two victims have been left wounded, law enforcement suspect that there may be more victims, according to ABC News.

Rod Carroll, a Jefferson County Sheriff's Department deputy, confirmed that one victim had died in the shooting and described the incident as a hostage situation.

It is understood that the victims were visitors and not courthouse employees, as some media outlets had initially reported.

The victims, reportedly both young and old, were scheduled for an afternoon hearing at the courthouse, before the unidentified gunman suddenly opened fire.

The suspected gunman is currently in hospital after being shot, although his condition is currently unknown, according to the Associated Press.

The courthouse shooting is the second to occur in a week, following the March 7 incident that took place outside a Tulsa County Courthouse in Oklahoma.

The Tulsa shooting left one deputy and three others injured. The suspected gunman was described as barefoot when he entered the courthouse plaza, and it was said to be a random incident.
