Amazing Spiderman 3 Release Date, Plot Spoilers: Sequel Delayed Until 2018, Female Superhero to Fill the Gap?

Fans of the friendly neighborhood superhero won't see the much-anticipated "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" for another four years, according to reports.

According to the website, Sony's Columbia Pictures did initially say that it will be releasing the third sequel in 2016. But at the recent San Diego Comic-Con, the studio announced that the expected film won't be released until a "still-unknown date in 2018."

Deadline also reports that Sony will be revamping the superhero franchise. The company may introduce a female superhero in 2017 to fill in the gap.

The site didn't indicate which character, but it speculated on the strong possibilities that it could be Black Cat, Firestar, Stunner, Silver Sable, or even Spider-Woman.

Comic book fans know that Spider-Woman is comprised a variety of fictional characters in the Marvel universe including Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter, Mattie Franklin, and Charlotte Witter. The latter is a fashion designer who is genetically altered by Dr. Octopus.

Black Cat, on the other hand, was recently introduced in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" as Felicia Hardy (Felicity Jones), Harry Osborn's personal secretary and daughter of a famous cat burglar Walter Hardy, also known as The Cat.

Silver Sable possesses no superhuman abilities but is adept in various martial arts and is formidable when it comes to hand-to-hand combat. She is rumored to play a huge part in the purported 2016 supervillain film "Sinister Six."

Deadline further indicated Sony's recognition of the viewing public's "changing appetite" when it comes to movie characters.

"With Salt, Wanted and Lucy, there is a huge appetite for this right now," an insider told the site. This may suggest the audience's craving for female leads.
