'The Bastard Executioner' spoilers, cast rumors: Katey Segal leads; creator Kurt Sutter to play a role; singer Ed Sheeran joins the cast

FX has its first historical drama series in the upcoming "The Bastard Executioner." The show will follow a warrior knight, Wilkin Brattle (Lee Jones) in King Edward III's court. The steadfast knight has been broken by the ravages of war and pledges to leave the way of sword. And when bloodshed strikes again, the retired knight is compelled to pick up his sword.

The series is set in the early 14th century and a portion of the plot will deal with the fallout from the Madog ap Llywelyn Welsh rebellion. It is created by Kurt Sutter who was behind the smash show "Sons of Anarchy." Sutter promises the gore-loving fans that there will be lots of blood.

The two new trailers for the show have just been released. The first trailer titled "Kneel" asks the audience to kneel beside the executioner as he bows down with his slaying sword in tow. And then it pans out to show an array of weapons. The second trailer, "Scythe," shows a man swinging away at harvest that quickly evolves into a scene between two men sword fighting, and when it ends, it looks like only one makes it out alive.

Actor Charlie Hunnam star of Sons of Anarchy would love to join the cast, but creator Kurt Sutter said "Charlie really wants to come and do, like, a little arc but, he's sort of booked solid for the next three years, so I don't know if that'll happen."

The upcoming series has a stellar cast in its lineup. Actress Katey Sagal, who incidentally is the wife of creator Sutter, will play Annora of the Alders, a mystical healer. Actor Stephen Moyer of "True Blood" fame will play Milus Corbett, Wilkin's chamberlain, right-hand man and drinking buddy. Other actors include Flora Spencer-Longhurst (Baroness Lowry 'Love' Aberffraw Ventris), Sam Spruell (Toran Prichard), Darren Evans (Ash y Goedwig), Danny Sapani (Berber the Moor), Timothy V. Murphy (Father Ruskin), Sarah White (Isabel Kiffin), and Sarah Sweeny will play Jessamy Maddox, the executioner's wife.

The creator of the series himself, Kurt Sutter, will play The Dark Mute, Annora's mate, but no one will ever see his face. There are two notable stars that will have recurring roles on the show. Actor Matthew Rhys, best known for his role as Kevin Walker in "Brothers & Sisters," will play Gruffudd y Blaidd, the leader of the Welsh rebels.Singer Ed Sheeran will show the world his acting chops as Sir Cormac, a determined and murderous protégé of a high-ranking church elder.

The new series has just recently finished shooting its first episode. Sutter shared a photo on Instagram with the caption: "We have wrapped. Thank you to my extraordinary production team and my brilliant cast. I measure my creative experiences by surprises. If the good outweigh the bad, I'm satisfied. But if the good make you forget the bad, I'm fulfilled. #TBX #pilot #fulfilled"

The Bastard Executioner will premiere on Sept. 15.
