The BlobFish and God's 'Ugliest' Creations

God has a purpose for all of His creations. Even creatures that look like this…

1) The Blobfish

The Blobfish is a deep-sea fish of the family Psychrolutidae. It inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of mainland Australia and Tasmania. Blobfish live so deep in the ocean that pressures are extremely high. The Blobfish's gelatinous appearance and pudding-like flesh allows it to stay buoyant at depths where gaseous bladders cannot function.

In September 2013 the blobfish was voted the "World's Ugliest Animal" and adopted as the mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, in an initiative "dedicated to raising the profile of some of Mother Nature's more aesthetically challenged children."

2) The Naked Mole Rat

The Naked mole rat lives underground in insect-like colonies, and has very little need for good eyesight. Their hairless bodies give them a rather shocking and grotesque image but is actually an adaptation for their underground environment.

Naked mole rats are among the longest living of all rodents given their size, and can live for nearly 30 years. Scientists have also found that they have a remarkable resistance to cancer.

3) The Proboscis Monkey

Some humans might think that when God was handing out the noses, the Proboscis Monkey turned up late. However, for these monkeys surprisingly the larger the nos the better!

Scientists have found that female Proboscis Monkey are attracted to the males with the largest, widest orange noses.

The large noses also have their practical purposes, and help the monkeys to produce a loud, resonating warning call.

4) Star-Nosed Mole

Talking about noses it seems we spoke too soon. The Star-Nosed Mole was actually at the back of the line when the noses were given out.

Known for having one of the most "unique" (slash horrifying) noses in the animal kingdom, the Star-Nosed Mole has 22 fleshy appendages that look just plain weird! What was God thinking about when he made this nose? In fact the Star-Nosed Mole has an extremely useful schnoz. The 22 fleshy appendages are extremely sensitive and act very much like fingers for the mole.

Their noses are also lined with an amazing 25,000-plus minute sensory receptors that help the mole feel its way through its underground lair in pitch darkness!

5) The Aye-Aye

No that's not a Gremlin, it's an Aye-Aye – a primate found in Madagascar. It looks kind of like a bat, kind of like a rat, and its fingers look positively witch-like.

Even though the Aye-aye ranks a zero in the hug-ability factor, it actually has numerous traits that help it survive in its nocturnal environment. Its long, bony, witch-like middle finger can be used to pry insects and grubs from deep inside tree trunks. Its large ears are of course all the better to hear you with.
