'The Disaster Artist' News, Release Date: Official Trailer Shows James Franco's Spot-on Turn as Tommy Wiseau

A24 has released the official trailer of "The Disaster Artist" starring James and Dave Franco.

The trailer previewed the friendship between Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) and Greg Sestero (Dave Franco), who met while attending an acting class. Sestero's admiration of Wiseau's confidence led them to become good friends. Unable to land any acting roles, the latter decided to make his own film and enlisted Sestero's help.

"So there's this guy Johnny, a true American hero, to be played by me," Wiseau said. "He has it all. Good look, many friends, and also maybe Johnny is vampire. We'll see."

And while the film showed Wiseau's unconventional acting and wasting of the film's budget, it was primarily about his friendship with Sestero. This much was revealed by some of the cast members in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Apart from friendship, the film is also about fulfilling one's dreams.

James Franco revealed that they were initially dreading what the real Wiseau's reaction would be upon seeing "The Disaster Artist," which was based on Sestero's memoir of the same name that chronicled the making of "The Room." Wiseau previously claimed that only 40 percent of the book was true. However, he approved "99.9 percent" of the film when it came out at SXSW in Texas.

Wiseau told the Los Angeles Times that he ultimately gave the rights to "The Room" because he thought Franco "would do a good job" after seeing his performance in 2002's "Sonny," which was directed by Nicholas Cage.

And it seems Wiseau was right to trust in Franco, who is already generating Oscar buzz for both his acting and directing work in "The Disaster Artist." Many fans are also already praising Franco's turn as Wiseau and his spot-on accent. To prepare for the film, Franco watched a lot of behind-the-scenes footage from "The Room."

"The Disaster Artist" will hit U.S. cinemas in December.
