'The Expendables' Mobile Game Coming Soon

"The Expendables" movie franchise is joining the mobile gaming bandwagon as well. The film's rights owner Lionsgate is working with Millennium Films and Hong Kong-based game developer and publisher Fifth Journey to develop a mobile game for smartphones and tablets based on the action movie franchise, which they announced recently.

The mobile game will released by the studio before the end of 2016, according to a report in Variety. Its release is likely to coincide with the release of the fourth installment of the film franchise. The game will be based on the movie and its characters, which are played by famous action stars such as Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, among others.

"The Expendables" franchise first started in 2010, and has had two sequels in 2012 and in 2014. The franchise has earned a total of over $800 million worldwide.

"We're delighted to partner with the incredibly talented and successful Avi Lerner of Millennium Films and the innovative Eric Tan of Fifth Journey to expand the universe of 'The Expendables.' Combining a powerful brand, a global fanbase stretching from North America to China and cutting edge technology, 'The Expendables' is the perfect cross-platform property to build into an action-packed mobile game loaded with state-of-the-art features," said Peter Levin, Lionsgate's president of interactive ventures and games.

Millennium Film's Lerner also had this to say in the statement, according to another report in The Hollywood Reporter: "With Lionsgate's tremendous marketing prowess and Fifth Journey's game development and publishing savvy, we're fortunate to have innovative and visionary partners who know how to take 'The Expendables' to a new level with a ground-breaking game that will thrill old and new audiences alike."

This is not the first time that Lionsgate has crossed over to the mobile gaming industry. It is already working with game developer Telltale for games based on other properties such as "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones." For a game based on "John Wick," it is working with Next Games and Starbreeze Studios.
