'The Following' Season 3 News, Update: Showrunner Exits, More Mystery-Filled Episodes to Come

FX's hit psychological thriller drama series "The Following" has been renewed for a third season and there have been drastic changes happening behind the scenes. "Lost" alum Jennifer Johnson, who joined the WBTV family last June, is exiting her position as showrunner, although she will still be involved in the development of the series.

Instead of affecting the creative setup of the show by putting new people in, management opted to promote writers Brett Mahoney and Alexi Hawley for the executive producer position in the Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy-led drama alongside executive producer Marcos Siega.

The reports now stem up different speculations whether these changes will once again create "creative differences" which has already happened at the first and second halves of season 2. Many viewers complained that "The Following" felt like two separate shows.

Nevertheless, tidbits from the people in the know suggests that season 3 will presumably pick up where Bacon's Ryan Hardy is now facing new responsibilities in life as he will try to balance being a serial killer hunter and a family man.

Creator and producer Kevin Williamson said in an interview that the upcoming season will be loaded with more mysteries.

"We got a mystery going this year, a mystery brewing about what's happening and what's not. Who's behind what. Who's doing what. Who's who. There's a big guessing game. It is a web of intrigue that all starts to become clear as it unfolds," he told Inside Pulse.

With regards to how the second season has ended, executive producer Marcos Siega gave light to speculation on why they decided not to kill Purefoy's ex-teacher turned cult leader character Joe Carroll.

"I think there's a still bit of story to wrap up. In season 3, we need Joe for a very specific reason," he explained.

There's still no specific target date yet for the premiere of season 3. Fans have predicted, however, that it will come in January of 2015.
