'The Get Down' Updates: Christina Aguilera Debuts New Identity in the Series As She Sings 'Telepathy'; Dizzee (Jaden Smith) Experiences First Kiss with Another Man

"The Get Down" is more than the evolution of disco and hip-hop in the 70s, but more on the changing sexuality of the different characters in the series.

Netflix's "The Get Down" has been getting a lot of attention, especially from fans of disco music from the 70s. But lately, more than ever, it has captured the interest of viewers because of two things. One, Christina Aguilera's outstanding performance and two, Dizzee's (Jaden Smith) first onscreen kiss with a man.

"Telepathy" by Christina Aguilera

At a gay disco, a drag queen dressed in a Grace Jones-like hooded gown is Christina Aguilera. Standing in an elevated balloon-decorated platform with the crowd dancing and cheering, she performed a gut-wrenching "Telepathy". Aguilera sang the song that will not just make viewers remember her in "The Get Down" but will also be the soundtrack of Dizzee's first ever kiss with a man.

In the official Netflix video of the "Telepathy" song in "The Get Down", fans will witness transformations happening as the singing diva performs on stage.

Mylene Cruz, played by Herizen Guardiola, metamorphosed from a simple choir girl to a sensational sexy diva. Seeing that Dizzee was eyeing the blonde boy, Thor (Noah Le Gros), on the dance floor, but sensing his hesitation to approach the other guy, Mylene coaxed Dizzee to make the first move.

She kissed Dizzee on the lips, which surprised him. After their kiss, she urged the two to do the same. She even told the blonde that Dizzee was a good kisser.

Sexuality as a theme

"The Get Down" is not just about the evolution of disco music in the 70s, but it also focuses on sexuality and the realization of many things for teenagers of this era. Dizzee and Mylene are just two of the characters that have openly accepted their transformation. And Aguilera's song has become their anthem.

The resurrection of Aguilera's career

The "Genie in a Bottle" singer is no different from Mylene in the series. Some say that her voice is sheltered in electronic dance music or EDM beats, where she would wail occasionally. Her talent is asking for more and rich disco music may just be the release that she needs.

This new identity for the singer is fitting, considering that disco music does not just rely on synthesizers, but also on strong vocals. Aguilera has associated with the queer culture in the past, with two of her latest albums pushing into that theme.

"The Get Down" is now streaming on Netflix.
