The Inbetweeners 2 Release Date, Cast News: Movie Claims UK's Biggest Weekend Debut of the Year, No Date Set for US Release

Though "The Inbetweeners" didn't get to be a hit in the U.S. — MTV's version was canceled after just one season — the sitcom enjoyed great success in the UK, and the big screen version of the comedy became the country's biggest weekend debut of 2014, grossing more than $21 million over the weekend.

The film is based on the popular British sitcom about four crude teenagers, and the first "Inbetweeners" film was supposed to be the final chapter for the characters after three seasons on television. However, when the film grossed $71.2 million in the U.K., a sequel became inevitable.

Co-writer and co-director Iain Morris spoke to DenOfGeek.com and revealed why they eventually decided to film "The Inbetweeners 2."

"It got to the stage where so many people said they loved the first one, and wondered if we were doing another one," said Morris. "I'd go, 'No', they'd go, 'Why not?' and it became like an embarrassing question! We don't have a good answer — we got on really well, we've not fallen out … In the end, it just seemed mental to stop doing it."

When asked if there was a chance for another "Inbetweeners" film, Morris and his collaborator Damon Beesley told British media outlet Metro that there was "zero percent chance" of a third installment, since at least one of the four characters is now being played by a married father of two in his mid-20s.

Though British fans loved the first film, it failed to do well in the U.S. as it only made a humbling $36,000. "The Inbetweeners 2" currently does not have a release date in the U.S., nor a distributor for the film.
