'The Last of Us' - fans to see the coming of movie and game sequel

Being one of the most-awarded games in the history of gaming, "The Last of Us" has gained a respectful number of fans all around the world, and with news of a movie and sequel's coming, the fandom could just get bigger.

Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells confirmed last year that the movie is in the works. "Our partnership with Sam Raimi, Ghost House Pictures, and Screen Gems to develop a film based on 'The Last of Us' universe is a perfect fit," he said.

Published by Sony Computer Entertainment and with over 1.3 million units sold in its first week of release, Wells explained that the game has allowed them to talk to many companies about creating a film. The exec also said the Naughty Dog team is looking forward to the collaboration with Sam and his own team, as well as Screen Gems, for a movie "that will thrill fans of The Last of Us and general audiences worldwide."

Raimi is the co-founder of Ghost House Pictures and he is also a film director, producer, writer, and actor, while Screen Gems is the famous curator for the hit video game-turned movie "Resident Evil."

Meanwhile, critics have eyed the coming of the game's sequel, with some providing suggestions as to what it would take to make the second installment a success.

Kenny McDonnell of Movie Pilot says one of the key factors that will make the sequel much stronger than its predecessor is for the game to feature the events of the 20-year rift between the death of Joel Miller's daughter, Sarah, and his life with Ellie.

Some fans have also mentioned that Joel's life after Sarah's death, including his involvement in drug and weapon smuggling in the quarantined areas of Boston, is a perfect plot for the sequel as this portion of his life will somehow create the connection to his father-daughter relationship with Ellie.

For the upcoming movie, Masie Williams has been cast as Ellie, while production is still in early talks with Hollywood A-listers for Joel, Movie News Guide reports.
