'The Leftovers' News, Updates, Spoilers: Will the Final Season Skip the 'Explosive' Ending and Settle for 'Comforting'?

HBO's dystopian series, "The Leftovers," had just finished filming for its third and final season from Australia, as it's previously announced on its Twitter page. The recent production at the Land Down Under was a huge leap from the show's previous locales, New York and Texas. However, Australia actually plays a huge role in the final installment of the dystopian series, as the continent is known for its connections with the supernatural and shamanism.

According to several reports, "The Leftovers" Season 3 had travelled to Melbourne to figure out what happened during the Sudden Departure. It was referenced during "The Leftovers" Season 2 finale, when Kevin (Justin Theroux) found out that his father was traveling to the continent after he left Mapleton's mental institution.

In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Damon Lindelof ("Lost") discussed the ending of "The Leftovers" Season 3, and what fans could expect from the show's final curtain call. He first took note of the small but impassioned audience, saying he doesn't feel the same pressure as he would if he were on global phenomenon shows like "Game of Thrones" and "The Walking Dead."

Instead, he's intent on delivering an ending that would satisfy the show's cult following, and does not promise a "shocking" ending. This also means that "The Leftover" Season 3 will unlikely deliver conclusive answers to several burning questions, such as the origin of the Sudden Departure, but will focus more on the storytelling level of the show's entirety.

Lindelof also gone ahead and shot down sprouting rumors of extending the show beyond "The Leftovers" Season 3. Avid followers of the show would remember that the show had pretty much outrun its source material (Tom Perrota's novels of the same name) by the end of Season 1, which forced it to reinvent itself - successfully - by Season 2. Still, the show wasn't envisioned to run much longer than it should have, so suffice it to say that Season 3 is indeed the last fans will see "The Leftovers."

What to expect for "The Leftovers" Season 3

Justin Theroux, who leads the HBO show, had also talked about "The Leftovers" Season 3 in a recent interview with Collider. He confirmed that the final season of the show will be having eight episodes instead of ten, and will see most of the cast and crew return for "The Leftovers" fourth installment. He also refused to reveal spoilers for the show, thought promised a satisfying ending for the show.

"The Leftovers" Season 3 will return to HBO on 2017.
