The Remembering Box

We will . . . tell to the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord . . . and the wonders he has done. (Psalm 78:4 NIV)

Corrina, a young mother of four small children, took to heart the many Old Testament exhortations to remember. "Set up stones so you will remember . . . Bind these things to your foreheads and hands . . . Write them on your doorposts and gates . . . Tell your children what these things mean so they will know what the Lord requires, and what he has done . . ."

Corrina keeps a shoebox and puts in it symbols of events where she and her family have seen God's provision or protection, so they will not forget his goodness. A picture of the kitten that was lost, then found; a leaf, reminding them of the fall from a tree that only resulted in a few scrapes; a key to their first home, a little cross for each child who has made a personal commitment to follow Jesus.

Remembering inspires gratitude. Things we begin to take for granted are seen in a new light when we take time to reflect. God is always good; he is always faithful. Today is a perfect time to stop and remember, and thank him!

Prayer: Father, remind me of your many acts of kindness. Give me opportunities to recount them to others that they may know what a good and loving Father you are.
