"Samsung Display showcased a 5.5 ultra-high definition 4K display with a pixel density of 806 ppi for virtual reality devices at the Society for Information Display, a display trade show, in California in March," says a UBI Research official.

"Considering various factors including the production yield rate for the next-generation display expected to improve in the coming months, the 5.5-inch AMOLED will be deployed in the next Galaxy smartphone, presumably, named the S8."

The Galaxy S8's Display is Designed for Virtual Reality Purposes

The 4K resolution is more than just about keeping up with the goal of trying to one up the competition everytime a flagship device is launched. This high-resolution display is believed to serve the purpose of accommodating Virtual Reality (VR).

The design of the new flagship device is geared towards working with Samsung's own mobile virtual reality device, the Gear VR, and the rumored Google headset, called the Google Daydream.

The release date of the Galaxy S8 could be sometime in the early part of 2017. It is most likely to be launched during the 2017 Mobile World Congress, which could be held in February.

Another exciting development to watch out for come the Mobile World Congress is the launched of other Samsung devices that, according to rumors, would have a bendable screen. Under the codename "Project Valley," Samsung is said to be working on a pair of devices with flexible OLED.

One of the devices is a cosmetic compact and another one that converts from a 5-inch phone to a tablet with an eight-inch screen. Samsung could be launching these devices early next year in order to gain a headstart against the launching of new products from its biggest rival Apple Inc.
