The Train Wreck Continues: Healthcare.gov to be Shut Down on National Youth Enrollment Day

With National Youth Enrollment Day just around the corner, new reports say that Healthcare.gov will be shut down for scheduled maintenance beginning on Saturday, February 15-the last day to enroll for coverage beginning March 1.

February 15 is also National Youth Enrollment Day, where the administration is promoting over 200 nationwide events where young people can get covered. Groups such as United Way, Young Invincibles, Get Covered America, and the American Cancer Society are partnering to promote enrollment through different events.

Yet again the administration continues to fail the American people, especially our youth. Young people are the key to Obamacare's success, but they are not enrolling. Obamacare is wildly unpopular among Millennials-not surprising, considering they are the tech-savvy generation, and the Healthcare.gov website is a bungled mess.

Young America's Foundation's polling continues to underscore that young people remain skeptical of this administration's handling of Obamacare. Millennials equate a terrible rollout and implementation of Obamacare with Obama's administration-after all, his name is on it. They know Barack Obama lied to the American people when he said, "If you like your healthcare plan you can keep it."

The Foundation's poll found that only six percent of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 have a more favorable opinion of the President following his "lie of the year." An astonishing 68 percent of youth are less favorable to Obama after he deliberately lied to the American people when he told them that if they liked their healthcare plan, they could keep it.

Enrollment numbers only cement the fact that Millennials do not want Obamacare. Only 24 percent of young people have actually enrolled since the opening of the exchange. The Foundation's poll predicts even more dire results for the President, with just 18 percent of young adults saying they are "likely to enroll" in Obamacare compared to a whopping 46 percent who are "not likely to enroll."

The truth of the matter is young people are expected to subsidize healthcare for the older and sicker generation and the cost of implementing Obamacare falls on the backs of the young and healthy.

The sheer irony in Youth Enrollment Day on February 15 is that the website will be down for maintenance. How does the White House expect young people to enroll at nationwide "Get Covered" events scheduled? The crucial point here is that February 15th is the final day for people to enroll in order to begin coverage on March 1st a major deadline-even if people enrolled before the shutdown they wouldn't know what plans they are eligible for.

Obamacare continues its destructive path of killing jobs and destroying the free market. As if a botched rollout wasn't bad enough, now on National Youth Enrollment Day, young people won't even be able to enroll.
