'The Vampire Diaries' Cast News, Update: Star Nina Dobrev Clarifies the Fate of Elena Once and For All

The premiere for the 7th season of The CW's hit supernatural drama series "The Vampire Diaries" is already drawing near and needless to say, one of the people who is highly anticipating for it to return to the small screen is none other than one of its cast members.

Actress Nina Dobrev, who starred as Elena Gilbert in the popular vampire show since its inception, recently told Entertainment Weekly how excited she is for Season 7.

"I can't wait to see what the new season will look like," she said. "I'll be watching. I'm very excited for my friends."

However, she went on to release a statement that apparently broke the hearts of those who wished for her Mystic Falls character to come back.

"That chapter is closed, sadly – bittersweet," she told EW.

The 26-year-old Bulgarian-Canadian announced her exit from the series back in April. It still came as a bit of a surprise for her followers despite them already hearing several ongoing rumors of her leaving the show.

Her "bittersweet" exit was ushered towards the end of Season 6 when Kai linked Elena to Bonnie's life by magic as she was laid to rest. It goes to say that the ex-vampire will only wake up from slumber when Kat Graham's character dies. Elena was left, in the previous season, locked inside one of the Salvatore tombs.

Dobrev later on dished out some of the reasons why she left the beloved show at the Teen Choice Awards last month. Quoting her statement, she emphasized the need for her, as an actress, to grow, just like Elena whom she played ever since she was young and is now already a woman.

As for the Elena Gilbert-less Season 7, executive producer and friend to Dobrev, Julie Plec, said at the Television Critics Association press tour that the show will now be shifting away from focusing on a single character.

"We finally have an opportunity to show off the ensemble and make them feel more like the stars of their own show," the showrunner said.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 premieres October 8 on The CW.
