'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 New Update: Nina Dobrev Talks About Her Exit, Showrunner Julie Plec Plans for 'Nina-less' Future

Nina Dobrev's untimely exit from The CW's hit supernatural TV drama series "The Vampire Diaries" saddened the fans. The star, who played the leading role as Elena Gilbert, really wanted to expand her horizon in Hollywood.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 26-year-old revealed that she's a "woman" already and it's time for her to tread new grounds.

"I always came to work excited, and looking forward to the next thing I got to do," she explained. "It was almost like actor boot camp, or a college experience. I started college in real life, but I never finished. I went to high school in real life, and then went to 'Degrassi' high school, and then four years as Elena -- 12 years is a long time to go to school. I need to graduate! I'm ready now."

"I'm ready to go into the real world. I've literally grown up on this show. I was a baby when I started, and now I'm a woman," Dobrev continued. "I knew this was my time, and I'm excited for the next step."

The Bulgarian-Canadian actress did admit that she will really miss her co-stars on the set, though.

"I am very sad that I'm not going to get to spend every day with my favorite people in the world, but, that's why we have FaceTime and phone calls. Friendships are like vampires: They'll last forever if they're real," she said.

Showrunner Julie Plec talked to fans about the "Nina-less" future of the vampire series.

"To the people who will never be satisfied without Elena Gilbert in it, I say, 'Sorry, it's been a beautiful ride, and I hope you give us a shot moving forward, but if not, thank you for the passion and commitment you've given up to this point,'" Plec told TV Line. "To the people who are ready and willing to see where the show goes without her, I think we're going to take them on a really cool, exciting ride."

"There's hope at the end of the series that we'll be able to give Elena the resolution that Kevin [Williamson] and I have always wanted to give her since Day 1," the executive producer said.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 finale episode titled "I'm Thinking of You All the While" airs this Thursday, May 14, at 8 p.m. on The CW.
