Vampire Diaries Season 6 Spoilers: Show Exec Explains Interrupted Delena Kiss, Julie Plec Teases Spoilers

Fans of "The Vampire Diaries" particularly Ian Somerhalder's Damon and Nina Dobrev's Elena fans, have been hoping for the two to get together again, and last week's Christmas episode titled "Christmas Through Your Eyes" seemed like the perfect time for them to kiss under the mistletoe.

However, just as Damon was about to meet Elena under the mistletoe at his front door, Kai showed up, cloaked her in magic and knocked her out before that much-awaited kiss could happen. Moreover, he siphoned all the magic from the Traveler spell that held together the magic border around Mystic Falls, and now that border is gone.

Show executive Caroline Dries spoke to E! News about the shocking midseason finale and talked about the border and the Delena mistletoe scene.

"We wanted it to be more impactful so we didn't want to get rid of it right away … Mystic Falls represents the core our show for our characters so the drive to come home again was a symbolic mission for them in the first half of the season. It all worked out that Kai could siphon up that spell. It was the perfect way of getting rid of it," she said.

Dries also knew that Delena fans were frustrated because the two didn't get to kiss.

"I know it was probably maddening for a lot of people since the mistletoe was highly promo-ed," she said.

"We wanted to end it with a cliffhanger and while we're all ready for Delena to be back and work things out, we also wanted to give the episode a big twist. That's how that came about."

Meanwhile, hours after the show's midseason finale, show creator Julie Plec took to Twitter to tease what's in store for the rest of season 6 when the show comes back in January. Plec posted 17 spoilers on Dec. 11, and here's what she wrote on her Twitter feed:

• There will be a gorgeous episode directed by [Paul Wesley]
• We will finally meet the real Sarah Salvatore.
• Bonnie will return, but when? And how will her experience have changed her?

• There will be "A LOT" of kissing…by more than one couple.
