'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 Spoilers, News: Ian Somerhalder Directs, Stefan and Elena Race Against Time

Good things come to those who wait, and this week, the hit supernatural TV drama series "The Vampire Diaries" returns after a brief hiatus with another exciting episode on its Season 6.

Titled "The Downward Spiral," fans of the show have long been talking about this segment as this has been directed by none other than the series' own cast member, Ian Somerhalder.

Touted to deliver a perfect mix of drama and suspense, tonight's segment will see the fate of Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline's (Candice Accola) romance.

An official synopsis was posted on Dread Central where it tells that the huge change that will happen to Caroline.

"After shutting off her humanity following the death of her mother, Caroline (Candice Accola) gives her friends an unexpected ultimatum," the summary reads.

It went on to indicate that driven with the fear for what the "new Caroline" is capable of doing, Stefan attempted to intervene into the situation. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. To make matters worse, the setback caused by Stefan's intervention would send him and Elena (Nina Dobrev) "in a race against the clock."

Meanwhile, Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) world is "turned upside down" when he learns the ugly news concerning his mother, Lily (guest star Annie Wersching), from Kai (Chris Wood) who offers him the information he needed about the prison world.

Elsewhere, Enzo's (Michael Malarkey) curiosity with the newcomer Sarah Salvatore (guest star Tristin Mays) grows increasingly strong in this episode. Boonie (Kat Graham) on the other hand, begins to feel the "effects of being back in the real world."

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 6 airs this Thursday, March 12, with episode 16 "The Downward Spiral" on The CW.
